Peter J. Stang, prof. of University of Utah, editor-in-chief of Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS), visited DICP from Dec. 10th to 11th. This visit was financial supported by ‘Zhang Dayu Lectureship’, the special fund project of DICP.
On Dec. 10th, Prof. Stang attended an academic salon, which was organized by the postdoctoral fellowship of DICP. In this salon, Prof. Stang talked with the young scientists and post-doctors about how to choose research direction, how to innovate in scientific research, and how to submit a manuscript to JACS. Later in the afternoon, Prof. Stang visited Group 1810, the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Reaction Dynamics and the State Key Laboratory of Catalysis.
ZhangDayu lectureship (X VI) was held at Conference Hall of Biotechnology Building On the morning of Dec. 11th. Prof. Keli Han hosts this lecture. Prof. Tao Zhang, the director of DICP, awarded the certification of “ZhangDayu Lectureship” and certification of honorary professorto Prof. Stang.
After that, Prof. Stang delivered the speech named “Abiological Self-Assembly: Predesigned Metallacycles and Metallacages via Coordination”. The use of just two types of building blocks, Prof. Stang said, linear and angular, in conjunction with symmetry considerations allows the rational design of a wide range of metallocyclic polygons and polyhedra via the coordination motif. ‘The powerful of self-assembly,’ said by Prof. Stang. He and his colleagues have used this approach to self-assemble a variety of 2D supramolecular polygons such as triangles, rectangles, squares, hexagons, etc. as well as a number of 3D supramolecular polyhedra: truncated tetrahedra, triginal prisms, cubooctahedra and dodecahedra. Prof. Stang gave us an optimistic perspective of the applications of these novel metallocyclic assemblies. About 150 researchers were presented at this lecture.

Prof. Peter J. Stang mainly engaged in the research of supramolecular self-assembly. He has made the significant contribution to the coordination chemistry, organic metal and iodine chemistry. He is one of the best-known scientists in the field of the molecule construction and molecular assembly. So far he has more than 500 scientific publications and a number of patents which produced important influence on the field of chemistry.
"ZhangDayu Lectureship" is the top academic forum of DICP. No more than 4 top scientists who are active in the front of sciences will be invited to DICP to have a short time academic visit per year. These scientists are internationally recognized in their research field. They will be employed as an honorary professor of DICP after their visit.(Photo/ Text by Junxia Ding and Songqiu Yang)
