In the jointly convened 15th Meeting of Members of Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS) and the 10th Meeting of Members of Chinese Academy of Engineering(CAE) in Beijing on 9th June, five CHEN Jiageng Science Awards for the year of 2010 were bestowed upon five outstanding Chinese Scientists. Among the five award-winners was Prof. YANG Xueming of DICP, and he obtained the 2010 CHEN Jiageng Chemistry Science Award for his important contributions in the research of "state-state chemical reaction kinetics". The Award was granted to Prof. Yang jointly by Prof. LU Yongxiang, President of CAS, and Prof. XU Kuangdi, President of CAE.

The late Mr. CHEN Jiageng (1874-1961) was a very prominent Chinese overseas businessman, community leader, philanthropist, and  a Chinese political leader after the establishing of the People’s Republic of China. The Award nameded after him is one of the highest honors in China for natural scientists.

Prof. YANG Xueming has been engaging in the experimental resaearch of molecular spectometry and chemical kinetics for more than 20 years. Under his leadership, sophisticated cross molecular beam installations of a new generation have been set up at DICP, and by means of these advanced devices he dived into experimental studies of a series of important problems in chemical kinetics. Especially, he made internationally noticable breakthroughs and got significant results in the studies of “state-state reaction kinetics”, which have raised the elemental reaction kinetic researches to a new level of full quantum state resolution. Futhermore, by collaborating with theoretical chemists, he was able to solve a number of long-standing scientific toughies, and one of these achievements was the solving of the problem of reaction resonance in the reaction of F+H2, an important reaction in chemical laser systems. This unsolved problem has existed for more than 30 years. His contributions have greatly pushed forward the development of state-state reaction kinetics, especially in the areas of resonance state kinetics and non-adiabatic kinetics.
