In recent years, by means of a combining technique of a home-made Rydberg state hydrogen atom time-of-flight spectrometer and a narrow-line and wide-wavelength adjustable vacuum UV laser source, the DICP research team headed by Prof. YANG Xueming has undertaken a series of studies on kinetics of rotational state resolved state-state photolysis of water molecules and corresponding isotopes. The DICP researchers have also collaborated with Prof. Richard N.Dixon of Bristol University of UK to carry out theoretical studies on this program. A series of fruitful achievements have been attained. Recently, YANG Xueming and YUAN Kaijun of the DICP team were invited by the journal of Accounts of Chemical Research of the American Chemical Society to write a review article on the above-mentioned studies, and the review was published in the newly appearing issue of the journal as a cover paper(Accounts of Chemical Research, 2011, 44, 369-378).

Up to now, the Yangs team has published 19 papers on the photolysis kinetics of water molecules, among them, one was published in Science, one in Acc. Chem.Res., one in PNAS, and two in PRL. Furthermore, two of the papers were published as a cover paper by JCP and JPC respectively.

The research accomplishments of Yangs team rendered a clear and in-depth understanding on the properties of electron excited states in water molecules, the detailed mechanism of the dissociation process, the influence of rotational excitation on the photolysis process, and so on. These research results also provided basic research guidance for studies of the action and mechanism of water molecules on atmospheric chemistry, combustion chemistry, interstellar chemistry, as well as for application of hydrogen energy in the future.
